Six Responses to God’s Call, Part 1

SCRIPTURE: Exodus 3:1-22, 4:1-9 (ESV)

Now Moses was keeping the flock of his father-in-law, Jethro, the priest of Midian, and he led his flock to the west side of the wilderness and came to Horeb, the mountain of God. 2 And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. 3 And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.” 4 When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush, “Moses, Moses!” And he said, “Here I am.” 5 Then he said, “Do not come near; take your sandals off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” 6 And he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.

Exodus 3:1-6 (ESV)

INTRO: When God Starts a Fire

  1. First Response: Who Am I? The question of Authority
  2. Second Response: Who Are You? The question of Autonomy
  3. Third Response: What if They Don’t Believe Me? The question of Adequacy

But I will be with you, and this shall be the sign for you, that I have sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God on this mountain.”

Let Go Your Baby

SCRIPTURE: Exodus 2.1-25; Hebrews 11.23; Romans 8.15-17; Matthew 16.25 (ESV)

Now a man from the house of Levi went and took as his wife a Levite woman.  2 The woman conceived and bore a son, and when she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months.  3 When she could hide him no longer, she took for him a basket made of bulrushes and daubed it with bitumen and pitch. She put the child in it and placed it among the reeds by the river bank.  4 And his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done to him.  5 Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her young women walked beside the river. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her servant woman, and she took it.  6 When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby was crying. She took pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”  7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?”  8 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” So the girl went and called the child’s mother.  9 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him.  10 When the child grew older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, “Because,” she said, “I drew him out of the water.”

Exodus 2:1-10 (ESV)
  1. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name (Matthew 6:9)
  2. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven(Matthew 6:10)
  3. Give us this day our daily bread (Matthew 6:11)
  4. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors (Matthew 6:12)
  5. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil (Matthew 6:13)

One day, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his people and looked on their burdens, and he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his people.  12 He looked this way and that, and seeing no one, he struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.  13 When he went out the next day, behold, two Hebrews were struggling together. And he said to the man in the wrong, “Why do you strike your companion?”  14 He answered, “Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid, and thought, “Surely the thing is known.”  15 When Pharaoh heard of it, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and stayed in the land of Midian. And he sat down by a well.  16 Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came and drew water and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock.  17 The shepherds came and drove them away, but Moses stood up and saved them, and watered their flock.  18 When they came home to their father Reuel, he said, “How is it that you have come home so soon today?”  19 They said, “An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds and even drew water for us and watered the flock.”  20 He said to his daughters, “Then where is he? Why have you left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread.”  21 And Moses was content to dwell with the man, and he gave Moses his daughter Zipporah.  22 She gave birth to a son, and he called his name Gershom, for he said, “I have been a sojourner in a foreign land.”

During those many days the king of Egypt died, and the people of Israel groaned because of their slavery and cried out for help. Their cry for rescue from slavery came up to God.  24 And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.  25 God saw the people of Israel—and God knew.

How to Pray So God Will Hear You

I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life. 14 And this is the confidence that we have toward him, that if we ask anything according to his will he hears us. 15 And if we know that he hears us in whatever we ask, we know that we have the requests that we have asked of him.

1 John 5:13-15 (ESV)
  1. Pray with CONFIDENCE
  2. Pray with COMPASSION
  3. Pray with UNDERSTANDING

If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask, and God will give him life—to those who commit sins that do not lead to death. There is sin that leads to death; I do not say that one should pray for that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, but there is sin that does not lead to death.

18 We know that everyone who has been born of God does not keep on sinning, but he who was born of God protects him, and the evil one does not touch him.

19 We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.

20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know him who is true; and we are in him who is true, in his Son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. 21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols.

The Testimony of Eternal Life

Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

6 This is he who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not by the water only but by the water and the blood. And the Spirit is the one who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth. 7 For there are three that testify: 8 the Spirit and the water and the blood; and these three agree. 9 If we receive the testimony of men, the testimony of God is greater, for this is the testimony of God that he has borne concerning his Son.

1 John 5:5-9 (ESV)
  1. World’s False Testimony (Matthew 16:13-14)
  2. God’s True Testimony
    • The SPIRIT (John 16:8-11)
    • The WATER (John 1:29-34, Matthew 3:16-17)
    • The BLOOD (John 1:29, Hebrews 10:1-18)
  3. Your Testimony (Matthew 16:15-17)

Whoever believes in the Son of God has the testimony in himself. Whoever does not believe God has made him a liar, because he has not believed in the testimony that God has borne concerning his Son. 11 And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.
