Nailed It: Hope for Legalism

May 2, 2017 by Guest Speaker

As we continue this 6 week series in the book of Colossians, we are going to learn how to Resurrect Hope from our puffed up wreck. The Apostle Paul will teach us how a renewed relationship with Jesus Christ will help us overcome discouragement and despair to live with Hope in a hopeless world.

Today we are going to focus on receiving hope from legalism which is man made rules applied in a spiritual sense. Often legalism has lead Christians away from the faith and from having faith, but it’s important to remember that the Holy Spirit does a much better job at telling us what we should or should not do, over what men try to do.

And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses,  by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. Colossians 2:13-14

Nailed It: Hope for Struggling

April 25, 2017 by Brad Murphy

As we continue this 6 week series in the book of Colossians, we are going to learn how to Resurrect Hope from our puffed up wreck. The Apostle Paul will teach us how a renewed relationship with Jesus Christ will help us overcome discouragement and despair to live with Hope in a hopeless world.

And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses,  by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. Col 2:13-14

The human struggle has often been described as an Iceberg. What is above the surface is only a small fraction of the real hurt, trauma, insecurity, and despair that lies beneath the surface. Today we will delve into the icy water and learn about the mystery of Jesus Cross that gives Hope for those who are struggling.

  • CHRIST is before all things | Col. 1:15-19
    • He holds together all things, because He created all things through and for: invisible and visible, thrones and dominions, rulers or authorities.
    • Recapturing Hope in the midst of a struggle starts by recognizing the wonder, majesty, and power of the One who is in us.
  • IN YOU | Colossians 1:20-23
    • The Creator, invisible, powerful, head of the Church is in you! We are second born, but joint heir
    • You were alienated | Col 1:21
    • You were hostile | Col 1:21
    • You were doing evil | Col 1:21
      • poneris= immoral, or wicked
      • 1 John1:8
  • THE HOPE OF GLORY | Colossians 1:24-29; 2: 1-5
    • Which is the hope of the gospel |Col 1:23
    • Which is rejoicing in suffering | Col 1:24; 2:1-2, Rom 5:1-5
    • Which is revealing mysteries | Col 1:25-28
    • Which is maturing everyone | Col 1:28; 2:4-5

The Gospel is a firm foundation, stable, steadfast, and sure footed. When fully embraced, and understood in the human heart it will make you mature and not easily convinced by false teachers.

> Be filled with Grace and Peace

  • Grace= Charis = Kindness, unmerited Favor of God.
  • Peace= Eh-Reh-Neh = which is the Greek translation of the Hebrew word shalom = state of being at peace, contentment.
  • The first part of the Ancient Secret to recapturing Hope is to be filled with the Grace and Peace of God the Father.

> Be filled with Faith

Paul’s prayer is that we understand the grace of God in truth.

  • Understood=epignosis=full knowledge, all you need.
  • No secret, unknown knowledge, rituals or initiation

> Be filled with kindness and with Hope

Greater Love

April 4, 2017 by Guest Speaker

We all face different struggles and sorrows. We work to find leaders, religious institutions, and spiritual experiences that will give us hope. We live in a time of restlessness and anxiety. The writer of the book of Hebrews encourages us to find Jesus and experience Him because He is Greater Love.

https://eaglelifechurch.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/2017-04-02.mp3
  1. Remember to always LOVE one another| Hebrews 13:1-6
Let brotherly love continue.  Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Remember those who are in prison, as though in prison with them, and those who are mistreated, since you also are in the body. Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous. Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”
  2. Remember our godly LEADERS| Hebrews 13:7-10
Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith.  Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited those devoted to them. We have an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat.
  3. Remember to always OFFER PRAISE to Jesus | Hebrews 13: 11-16
For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the holy places by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are burned outside the camp. So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood. Therefore let us go to him outside the camp and bear the reproach he endured. For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city that is to come. Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
  4. Remember to OBEY your leaders | Hebrews 13:17-19
Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they are keeping watch over your souls, as those who will have to give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with groaning, for that would be of no advantage to you. Pray for us, for we are sure that we have a clear conscience, desiring to act honorably in all things. I urge you the more earnestly to do this in order that I may be restored to you the sooner.
