Let Go Your Baby

SCRIPTURE: Exodus 2.1-25; Hebrews 11.23; Romans 8.15-17; Matthew 16.25 (ESV)

Now a man from the house of Levi went and took as his wife a Levite woman.  2 The woman conceived and bore a son, and when she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months.  3 When she could hide him no longer, she took for him a basket made of bulrushes and daubed it with bitumen and pitch. She put the child in it and placed it among the reeds by the river bank.  4 And his sister stood at a distance to know what would be done to him.  5 Now the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river, while her young women walked beside the river. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her servant woman, and she took it.  6 When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby was crying. She took pity on him and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”  7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call you a nurse from the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?”  8 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” So the girl went and called the child’s mother.  9 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.” So the woman took the child and nursed him.  10 When the child grew older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses, “Because,” she said, “I drew him out of the water.”

Exodus 2:1-10 (ESV)
  1. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name (Matthew 6:9)
  2. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven(Matthew 6:10)
  3. Give us this day our daily bread (Matthew 6:11)
  4. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors (Matthew 6:12)
  5. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil (Matthew 6:13)

One day, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his people and looked on their burdens, and he saw an Egyptian beating a Hebrew, one of his people.  12 He looked this way and that, and seeing no one, he struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.  13 When he went out the next day, behold, two Hebrews were struggling together. And he said to the man in the wrong, “Why do you strike your companion?”  14 He answered, “Who made you a prince and a judge over us? Do you mean to kill me as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses was afraid, and thought, “Surely the thing is known.”  15 When Pharaoh heard of it, he sought to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh and stayed in the land of Midian. And he sat down by a well.  16 Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came and drew water and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock.  17 The shepherds came and drove them away, but Moses stood up and saved them, and watered their flock.  18 When they came home to their father Reuel, he said, “How is it that you have come home so soon today?”  19 They said, “An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds and even drew water for us and watered the flock.”  20 He said to his daughters, “Then where is he? Why have you left the man? Call him, that he may eat bread.”  21 And Moses was content to dwell with the man, and he gave Moses his daughter Zipporah.  22 She gave birth to a son, and he called his name Gershom, for he said, “I have been a sojourner in a foreign land.”

During those many days the king of Egypt died, and the people of Israel groaned because of their slavery and cried out for help. Their cry for rescue from slavery came up to God.  24 And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.  25 God saw the people of Israel—and God knew.

Pattern of Prayer

Scripture: Matthew 6:5-15; Matthew 26:36-46 (ESV)

“And when you pray, you must not be like the hypocrites. For they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and at the street corners, that they may be seen by others. Truly, I say to you, they have received their reward. 6But when you pray, go into your room and shut the door and pray to your Father who is in secret. And your Father who sees in secret will reward you. but if you do not forgive others their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. 7 “And when you pray, do not heap up empty phrases as the Gentiles do, for they think that they will be heard for their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

Matthew 6:5-8 (ESV)

Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit here, while I go over there and pray.” 37 And taking with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, he began to be sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; remain here, and watch[a]with me.” 39 And going a little farther he fell on his face and prayed, saying, “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” 40 And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping. And he said to Peter, “So, could you not watch with me one hour? 41 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”42 Again, for the second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done.” 43 And again he came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were heavy. 44 So, leaving them again, he went away and prayed for the third time, saying the same words again. 45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them, “Sleep and take your rest later on. See, the hour is at hand, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise, let us be going; see, my betrayer is at hand.”

Lead Us Not

Scripture: Matthew 6:13; 1 Corinthians 10:13; 1 Timothy 6:9; James 1:13-15; 1 John 2:1; 1 John 2:8-9 (NIV)

“Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil”

Matthew 6:13 (ESV)
  1. What is Temptation?
  2. Does God Lead us to Temptation?
  3. Can we be Delivered from Temptation?

“For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone;  14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.”

James 1:13-15(ESV)

How to Pray for Forgiveness

Scripture: Matthew 6:12; Matthew 6:14-15; Matthew 5:21-48; 1 John 1:8-10; Mark 14:60-65; 1 Peter 2:21-24; Matthew 18:15-35; Romans 12:18 (ESV)

“Yforgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.”

Matthew 6:12 (ESV)
  1. God Forgives You
  2. Trust Him Who Judges Justly
  3. Un-forgiveness is Hurting You

“For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you might follow in his steps. 22 He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth. 23 When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly. 24 He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.”

1 Peter 2:21-24 (ESV)
