Hope for Holiness

April 16, 2023 by Brad Murphy

This sermon is part 2 of 8 in the Living Hope

Week 2 – Living Hope Series

SERMON & DIGITAL BULLETIN 16 April 2023, 10:30 a.m.

“Be Born Again to a Living Hope”

Today @EagleLifeChurch, Pastor Brad continues our Easter to Pentecost series “Living Hope.”

This is week two in the 9-week series. This series focuses on experiencing HOPE in the midst of life’s difficulties and struggles. In our culture, people are subjected to (surrounded by) dying hope. Hope has been replaced with hurt, abuse, trauma, lies, and despair.

During this series, we learn to find our LIVING HOPE in a savior who has struggled and suffered, who has been sabotaged and betrayed, who was beaten and buried, but he claimed the final victory over dying-hope by rising from the grave and inviting us to experience living hope.

In today’s sermon, Pastor Brad helps us understand the nature of evil and suffering and what God is doing to bring it to an end. We learn to have hope to be holy amid an evil generation.

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead

Hope for Holiness

SCRIPTURE: 1 Peter 1:3-25, 2:1-3 (ESV)

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

1 Peter 1:3-5 (ESV)
  1. Evil is SOMETHING (1 Peter 1.3-5)
  2. Evil isn’t SOME_THING (1 Peter 1.6-9)
  3. God is DOING SOMETHING About Evil Through His People (1 Peter 1.10-25; 2.1-3)

So put away all malice and all deceit and hypocrisy and envy and all slander. 2 Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation— 3 if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.

1 Peter 2:1-3 (ESV)

Faith in our Living Hope

SCRIPTURE: 1 Peter 1:1-12; John 3:1-17; 1 Corinthians 15:1-8 (ESV)

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

1 Peter 1:3-5 (ESV)
  1. Be Born Again
  2. Experience Living Hope
  3. Participate in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ

Jesus answered him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.” 4 Nicodemus said to him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?” 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.

SCRIPTURE: Malachi 3:16-18; 4:1-6; Psalm 111:10; Psalm 37:1-9,28-29,34; 2 Peter 3:8-10; Romans 3:21-26 (ESV)

Then those who feared the LORD spoke with one another. The LORD paid attention and heard them, and a book of remembrance was written before him of those who feared the LORD and esteemed his name. 17 “They shall be mine, says the LORD of hosts, in the day when I make up my treasured possession, and I will spare them as a man spares his son who serves him. 18 Then once more you shall see the distinction between the righteous and the wicked, between one who serves God and one who does not serve him.

Malachi 3:16-18 (ESV)
  1. You are His Treasure when He is Your PLEASURE
  2. You are His Treasure when He is Your LEISURE
  3. You are His Treasure when He is Your MEASURE

“For behold, the day is coming, burning like an oven, when all the arrogant and all evildoers will be stubble. The day that is coming shall set them ablaze, says the LORD of hosts, so that it will leave them neither root nor branch. 2 But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall. 3 And you shall tread down the wicked, for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet, on the day when I act, says the LORD of hosts.
4 “Remember the law of my servant Moses, the statutes and rules that I commanded him at Horeb for all Israel.
5 “Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes. 6 And he will turn the hearts of fathers to their children and the hearts of children to their fathers, lest I come and strike the land with a decree of utter destruction.”

Malachi 4:1-6 (ESV)

“Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before me. And the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple; and the messenger of the covenant in whom you delight, behold, he is coming, says the Lord of hosts. 2 But who can endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s fire and like fullers’ soap. 3 He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, and they will bring offerings in righteousness to the Lord. 4 Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the Lord as in the days of old and as in former years.

5 “Then I will draw near to you for judgment. I will be a swift witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers, against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hired worker in his wages, the widow and the fatherless, against those who thrust aside the sojourner, and do not fear me, says the Lord of hosts.

Malachi 3:1-5 (ESV)
  1. You are an Agent of God’s SOCIAL Justice
  2. You are an Agent of God’s ECONOMIC Justice
  3. You are an Agent of God’s SPIRITUAL Justice

Then those who feared the LORD spoke with one another.
