In today’s message, you will learn how God has given your house a legacy of faith.

Many use the Old Testament as a series of examples for people to follow for good living or shun as bad living.

But the Old Testament itself is a historical account of God calling people to himself and working in the world to accomplish his purpose.

How do we leave a legacy of faith?

In Joshua 24, we learn how to TELL, LEAD, and GIVE others a chance to follow God.

This is “THE PROMISE YOU CAN TRUST.”

Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them.

THE LEGACY OF FAITH | Joshua: Week 16

Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel. And they presented themselves before God.

THE LEGACY OF FAITH

  1. TELL Others What God has Done | Joshua 24:1-13
  2. LEAD Others into Covenant with God | Joshua 24:14-28
  3. GIVE Others into God’s Hands | Joshua 24:29-33, Judges 2:10

And I sent the hornet before you, which drove them out before you, the two kings of the Amorites; it was not by your sword or by your bow. I gave you a land on which you had not labored and cities that you had not built, and you dwell in them. You eat the fruit of vineyards and olive orchards that you did not plant.’

COVENANT WITH GOD

And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the Lord, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

In addition to God’s plan for salvation, He has a plan for you to stay, or remain, in his salvation.

How do we stay in the promise of God?

In Joshua 23, we learn how to live in the promise on the other side of salvation. This parallels Paul’s instructions in 2 Timothy 4:1-8 to endure suffering and fulfill the ministry.

THE CHARGE TO REMAIN | Joshua: Week 15

And you have seen all that the Lord your God has done to all these nations for your sake, for it is the Lord your God who has fought for you. 4 Behold, I have allotted to you as an inheritance for your tribes those nations that remain, along with all the nations that I have already cut off, from the Jordan to the Great Sea in the west. 5 The Lord your God will push them back before you and drive them out of your sight. And you shall possess their land, just as the Lord your God promised you.

THE CHARGE TO REMAIN

  1. God has Fulfilled His Promis
  2. Cling to God
  3. Do Not Cling to Idols

but you shall cling to the Lord your God just as you have done to this day.

ACCEPT THE CHARGE

“I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: 2 preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. 3 For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, 4 and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths. 5 As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.

6 For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.”

THE PROMISE OF RELATIONSHIP | Joshua: Week 14

But take careful heed to do the commandment and the law which Moses the servant of the Lord commanded you, to love the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways, to keep His commandments, to hold fast to Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.

Joshua 22:5 (ESV)

HOW TO RELATE TO GOD

  1. Love the Lord your God
  2. Walk in His Commandments
  3. Hold Fast to Him

And when they came to the region of the Jordan which is in the land of Canaan, the children of Reuben, the children of Gad, and half the tribe of Manasseh built an altar there by the Jordan—a great, impressive altar.

HOW TO RELATE TO OTHERS

Now when Phinehas the priest and the rulers of the congregation, the heads of the divisions of Israel who were with him, heard the words that the children of Reuben, the children of Gad, and the children of Manasseh spoke, it pleased them. 31 Then Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest said to the children of Reuben, the children of Gad, and the children of Manasseh, “This day we perceive that the Lord is among us, because you have not committed this treachery against the Lord. Now you have delivered the children of Israel out of the hand of the Lord.”

  1. Go to them one-on-one
  2. Try a mediator
  3. Bring it before the church

“If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. 16 But if he does not listen, take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses. 17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church. And if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector.
